Cabernet Sauvignon wines from California have special qualities and D'Argenzio Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 from the Lopez vineyard in Sonoma County is a spectacular Cabernet from California with all those qualities. That's because it's produced from Cabernet Sauvignon from old vines. D'Argenzio Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Lopez is aged for 20 months in French Oak barrels. The initial bouquet delivers almond-infused blackberry jam, deepening to notes of tobacco and worn leather. Sweet black cherry fills the mouth, followed by harmonious
layers of vanilla, mocha and smoky oak. Exceptionally well integrated, this Cabernet is refined and easy to enjoy. The Cabernet grapes in 2003 were grown in one of the warmest growing years in recent history. With extended hang time on the vine the fruit achieved a level of full maturity necessary for deep color
and flavor development. The Cabernet and Merlot vineyard lots were aged separately for twenty months in the finest French oak barrels prior to blending, then finished with four additional months of aging. Used were a combination of 60% new French oak barrels and 40% seasoned oak. Small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc were added to give this Cabernet additional depth and complexity, in the characteristic Bordeaux blend style. The vineyard is planted in the richly red and slightly rocky soils of Redwood Hill. At an elevation of 1500 feet, the vines grow well above the fog line and enjoy warm
sunshine on the slow-ripening fruit. A combination of vine maturity, rich soil
and hillside sun create an incredible Cabernet Sauvignon with outstanding
flavors and balanced tannins. Only 273 cases produced. Drink now through 2015.

"Heres another California Cabernet thats keeping the faith with the tried-and-true French model for the king of grapes: surround him with worthy courtiers who complement his size and strength with additional texture and nuance. This time the grapes are the traditional Cab companions: Merlot, Cab Franc and Petite Verdot. The wine carries a Sonoma County appellation because it comes from multiple AVAs (Dry Creek and Russian River), but it has an artisanal feel that plenty of single-vineyard wines just cant hang onto after being laminated with new wood and then de-alcoholized to take the heat off. Richard and Raymond Anthony DArgenzio prefer a more low-key approach, and the result in this Cab is a wine that feels both European and Californian a great combination when you can pull it off. The aromas are rich and thick, blending red and black berries and cherries plus telltale clove and vanilla from 100% new French oak (20 months). You get all these as flavors when you sip, along with classic bell pepper notes. As the wine expands to fill your mouth, the pepper notes integrate into the sweet, plump fruit. Though the wines already got some age on it, the tannins are still chunky and buzzy and the wine lifts off into a long, black-fruited finish. Id probably hold this another year or two and then decant before a rich meal."
