Best Shiraz Wine Rolf Binder Hanisch 2004 is considered one of the best Shiraz wines produced. Production is tiny at about 300 cases and it cannot be increased as it comes from a small number of vines that surround the winery. This vineyard makes intensely expressive shiraz that some say is the best in Australia. The wine is aged partly in new American oak and a smaller amount in new French oak that has been matured in the Barossa Valley for two years before being made into barrels by A.P.Johns of Tanunda, and partly in older French and American oak. This small vineyard area produces about 12 to 16 barrels and at the wine classification stage this is reduced to perhaps 10 to 12 barrels. It presents an intensely expressive Shiraz with full ripe body and deep ruby color. It is a very big wine that takes a little time to open up, but more than rewards the patient wine lover. A deep red-purple, this is a very rich fruit-forward wine, showing some oak and spice. You'll get an immediate attack of fruit with depth. It is not overpowering, but harmonious, with a rich core of firmness that makes it stand out. A great wine with harmony and depth, and a lovely persistence of fruit.

Rolf Binder has become one of the most famous and sought after winemakers in South Australia, and is credited by many for putting many Australian wines on the map. His parents entered the Australian wine world in the mid 1950's, shortly after immigrating from Hungary. Rolf and Christa were raised in this enviornment and learned the art of winemaking from their earliest days. Rolf is the winemaker for several premium brands, and a consultant for many others. But only one brand crafted at his Veritas Winery bares his own name.
RATINGS: 95 Points - Wine Advocate - Robert Parker
"Binder's flagship offering, produced from a vineyard planted in on sandy, gravelly, loamy soils, is his Shiraz Hanisch. The 2004 was aged in a combination of French and American oak, more than half of which was new. It boasts a beautiful blue/purple color, great stuffing, and a fabulous perfume of crushed rocks, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and flowers. This thick, opulent, powerful Shiraz needs 4-5 years of cellaring, and should drink well."

"Dark and juicy, with a lively frame supporting blackberry, black cherry, floral and black olive flavors. Hints at eucalyptus as the finish sails on and on against refined tannins. Best from 2008 through 2016."
