Bill Frick and Judith Gannon started this winery in 1976 with the proceeds from the sale of their 1957 Chevrolet. In the small, cool winery, hidden away on a back road, Bill Frick hand crafts complex, rare wines that reflect the true character of the grape. Frick Wines are individually crafted by hand. Traditional time honored methods of wine making are employed; that include hand harvesting the grapes, punching the cap by hand during fermentation, soft pressing, no fining or filtering and aging in small oak barrels.
Just west of Hopland in Mendocino County, a town once renowned for fine hops grown on rich Russian River silt, the Feliz Creek area is rocky and well drained with vineyards that date back to the 19th century. This Carignane vineyard has survived every change and fad in wine trends. The vines were planted over 100 years ago and offer low yield, solid old vine character. Maintaining tradition, the vineyard is head pruned (with no trellis) and dry farmed (not irrigated).
RATINGS: Frick Winery is not known to submit wines for rating. They feel that word of mouth is sufficient to sell the small production of the wines that they make.
Recommended Pairing: Roast chicken, minestrone soup, leg of lamb, spaghetti squash, osso bucco. |
