Patrice Rion Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2003 wine is very fine and elegant. Produced by reknown winery Domaine Michele & Patrice Rion, Gevrey Chambertin 2003 Vieilles Vignes shows a fine balance of tannins and acidity with a silky texture and long finish. Lots of cherry and black currant flavors with a great depth of bouquet. Deeply colored, with a nose of bay, black currants and other black fruits, along with musk, fur and paricularly when young, anise. Muscular with deep, rip tannins, they show a good balance of acidity. Altogether one of the most solid Burgundy wines.

Domaine Michèle and Patrice Rion, a small family-run winery located just below the slopes of Nuits-Saint-Georges, was created in 1990 by Patrice and his wife Michèle, starting with only one hectare of vines. Patrice Rion has been making wines since 1977. Over the years he increased his holding to 3 hectares in 5 different appellations. In September 2000 Patrice stopped making wines at his family's Domaine Daniel Rion to focus on his own vineyards. Patrice's hands-on process from budbreak through harvest guarantees the best quality fruit. He selects vineyards on good soils and uses vines 25 to 65 years old for the quality of their fruit: small, with thick skins to help obtain a deeply colored and complex wine. The vineyards are organic and avoid synthetic insecticides and pesticides. To keep a natural fauna balance, only organic fertilizers are used. To maintain quality he limits the crop size with pruning and harvests the grapes by hand which are brought to the winery in small airy boxes. Patrice wants balanced and completely natural wines so he uses indigenous yeasts, no enzymes and no acidification. Typically he cold macerates for 8 days with total cuvaison lasting 21 days, followed by a settling of the lees for 48 hours. His winery has thick insulation which keeps the temperature at 15c in the cellar and naturally consistant humidity guaranteeing the best conditions for aging the wines.
RATING: 90 Points - Robert Parker
"A pretty wine that shows roses, deep cherry on the close and a fair amount of finesse. A smooth and very easy wine to keep pouring. Garnet in color and very tasty"
89 Points - Burghound
"An interesting mix of warm earth, subtle spice and lower register red and black pinot fruit aromas combines with sweet, round, sappy and nicely intense medium full flavors that culminate in a velvety, slightly dry finish. Solid quality with plenty of mid-palate richness."
Recommended - Decanter
"Some rich, darker fruit aromas. Full, chewy and juicy on the compact palate. Plenty of depth and length with restraint. 5-10 years"
88 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"A firm, solid wine with dry layers of tannin between the red berry and plum fruit flavors. There's plenty of the right richness, along with the acidity, and some bold textures. For a village wine, this is just right."
