Russian River Pinot Noir from the 2005 Vintage. Dovetail Pinot Noir Indindoli Vineyard 2005 is like a great symphony. The first delicate nuances give yet a glimpse of what's to come. Very focused floral and purple fruit aromas gradually yield to air and blossom into a concentrated expression of Russian River Pinot Noir. The deep ruby/purple wine delivers a mouthful of crushed Bing cherries and kirsch liqueur that mingles seamlessly with the delicate tannins and acidity. The layers of flavor don't ever seem to stop unfolding on the palate. This is a full-throttled Pinot Noir, authoritative yet highly elegant, with explosive flavors, viscous mouthfeel, and food-friendly acidity that lasts through the finish. It begs for a fillet of grilled salmon. Only 130 cases were produced.
The remarkable Indindoli Vineyard is nestled in the heart of Russian River Valley. This vineyard was established by the esteemed Carmine Indindoli, who after thirty years of winegrowing, set out and found the perfect site to grow world class Pinot Noir. At just under two acres, the vineyard inclines gently up a western hill which offers earlier afternoon shading and protection from the summer sun. In addition, the region's temperate climate and Carmine's dedication to growing the finest quality grapes make this a spectacular site for Dovetail. The 2005 Pinot fermentation was long & slow, allowing protracted skin contact and beautiful color extraction. Over ten months the wine aged sur lies in Hungarian and French barrels, fifty percent of which were new.
Dovetail Vineyards is a boutique producer of exceptional quality that is dedicated to low-production Pinot Noir wines. Dovetail finds the finest sites for grapes, and then nurture them into wines. Dovetail is a classic, artisan joint of strength and integrity that unites two diverse pieces together into something beautiful. Their belief is that balanced harmony between winegrowing and winemaking is the only path to making premium wine. Owner Michael Logan works full-time on his wine making duties. The unconventional choice to make Pinot Noir was driven by Michael's passion for the wine. His love of Pinot from Burgundy, California, and Oregon practically forced his hand in pursuing this fickle yet enchanting varietal. As Dovetail grows, Michael's passion for other varietals may inspire new wines that will only be grown and made with the same excitement and enthusiasm he pours into Pinot. To accomplish their goals, Dovetail Vineyards start by farming the vineyards as if they are growing wine instead of simply farming grapes. Every year they work closely with growers and vineyard teams, and customize growing plans to match the diversity of each vineyard site. Conditions change though, and throughout the growing season they visit the vineyards and adjust those plans as the plants, their fruit, and Mother Nature dictate. As the grapes develop, the team can often be found tasting them in the field, gaining an understanding of the wine to be, and patiently observing maturity and ripeness converge. Unlike scientific methods, their own palates verify when grape flavors are in balance and have meshed with the wine envision, and only then is it time to pick. After harvest, the wine making flows from experiences during the growing season. Each lot is assessed and handled carefully throughout the process. They minimize intervention, use native yeasts whenever possible, incorporate only the finest oak barrels, and respond to the lots varying needs as they grow into their representations of site, varietal, and vintage. Ultimately Dovetail wines are made to best complement the grapes they have grown with such effort, and to allow the vineyards to express their strengths and personalities in your glass.
RATINGS: Due to the small production, Dovetail does not submit their wines for ratings. They have a large following through word of mouth.
Review by Pinot File
"15.2% alc., 130 cases, $52. This vineyard is planted to Dijon clones 115 and 667 over less than two acres. The wine was aged sur lies for 10 months in a combination of French and Hungarian barrels, 50% new. The nose is redolent with super ripe, jammy fruit leaning toward raisin with a little spearmint. The flavors carry on the theme with sweet darker fruits, raisin and spice. The alcohol is well integrated and the peach-skin tannins create a soft texture. This bottle may have been slightly oxidized. A wine of great appeal to fruit hedonists. Reviewed September 10, 2007 "
