Russian River Valley Pinot Noir with the aroma, taste and finish you expect from Sonoma County. Dovetail Pinot Noir 2005 is produced from premium grapes that are grown in the prized Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. When producing Pinot Noir, terroir is king. Dovetail Pinot Noir 2005 emphasizes how different Russian River Valley vineyard sites can come together and develop into a multi-faceted wine. This is classic Pinot Noir that incorporates ripe cherry fruit, hints of earth and subtle undertones of sweet oak that all emerge in an intangibly savory and authentic Pinot experience! Plush, polished and juicy on the palate, this wine fills the mouth without a hard edge in sight and finishes strong with lingering fruit and a gentle tingle. Only 105 cases were produced.
In 2005 Dovetail began acquiring tiny lots of select Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. The goal was to create a blend that harmonizes the various micro-climates within this famed growing region. Varying weather conditions, grape selections and soil types combine to create a seamless and multi-layered wine. The blend is comprised of four grape selections from three different small vineyard sites. Dovetail's Russian River Pinot 2005 is a fabulous wine and more Burgundian in style. Dovetail Vineyards is a boutique producer of exceptional quality that is dedicated to low-production Pinot Noir wines. Dovetail finds the finest sites for grapes, and then nurture them into wines. Dovetail is a classic, artisan joint of strength and integrity that unites two diverse pieces together into something beautiful. Their belief is that balanced harmony between wine growing and wine making is the only path to making premium wine. Owner Michael Logan works full-time on his wine making duties. The unconventional choice to make Pinot Noir was driven by Michael's passion for the wine. His love of Pinot from Burgundy, California, and Oregon practically forced his hand in pursuing this fickle yet enchanting varietal. As Dovetail grows, Michael's passion for other varietals may inspire new wines that will only be grown and made with the same excitement and enthusiasm he pours into Pinot. To accomplish their goals, Dovetail Vineyards start by farming the vineyards as if they are growing wine instead of simply farming grapes. Every year they work closely with growers and vineyard teams, and customize growing plans to match the diversity of each vineyard site. Conditions change though, and throughout the growing season they visit the vineyards and adjust those plans as the plants, their fruit, and Mother Nature dictate. As the grapes develop, the team can often be found tasting them in the field, gaining an understanding of the wine to be, and patiently observing maturity and ripeness converge. Unlike scientific methods, their own palates verify when grape flavors are in balance and have meshed with the wine envision, and only then is it time to pick. After harvest, the wine making flows from experiences during the growing season. Each lot is assessed and handled carefully throughout the process. They minimize intervention, use native yeasts whenever possible, incorporate only the finest oak barrels, and respond to the lots varying needs as they grow into their representations of site, varietal, and vintage. Ultimately Dovetail wines are made to best complement the grapes they have grown with such effort, and to allow the vineyards to express their strengths and personalities in your glass.
RATINGS: Due to the small production, Dovetail does not submit their wines for ratings. They have a large following through word of mouth.
Review by Pinot File
"14.9% alcohol., 105 cases, $39. The aromatics are shy but appealing with Bing cherry, cola and spice. Nicely weighted, the wine has juicy red fruits backed by oak spice. The finish is clean and refreshing. Reviewed September 10, 2007"
